This is one of the best quotes about mathematics. It tries to integrate math to real life by using basic terms such as add and subtract.

On the other hand, there is a contradiction on the idea that every problem in math has a solution (because some problems may have no solution). Looking deeply, eventhough there are NO SOLUTIONS in math, still it is the ANSWER to the problem. What is important is that there will always be an answer!

MULTIPLES OF 9 PATTERN

Let us recall the multiples of 9.

Do you notice any pattern of the multiples? That is of course aside from the pattern of having 9 added to previous entries. To make it easier for us to look for patterns, let us separate the digits of the multiples.

Now, let us look at the leftmost digit of the multiple. Do you see any pattern now? Have you notice of any relation of the digits from the topmost until the bottom?

If you notice, the digits are in ascending order from 1 - 9. A very simple pattern.

Let us look at the rightmost digits. Do you see any pattern?

I know you have noticed that the rightmost digits are arranged in descending order from 0 - 9.

If we combine the patterns:

This applies to the next multiples of 9. A very simple patter that you could teach your students, friends, brother or sister. Hope you like it.

NUMBER PUZZLE 2

Here is another number puzzle. I'll tell you how to answer the first one then try to do the other by your own. Here is the first one:

Let us try to decipher the pattern for the numbers.

In this number puzzle, try to focus on the results. For the first statement, if you notice, 1 is already the first digit and also the last digit. The middle digit, which is 2, comes from the sum of the two numbers.

For the case of 1 + 2, 1 is the leftmost digit but is not the rightmost digit. That means the pattern that we got in the first statement is not true to all the statements.

The only problem is how to make 2 to 4. We can multiply 2 by 2 and get 4 or square 2 to get 4.

Let us apply that with the first statement. The square of 1 is 1. This is applicable to both statements now.

Let us study the third statement. We cannot just copy the first number for the leftmost digit. They are not equal.

What is we square the first number? Let us check if all the digits are satisfied with the pattern that we got.

The picture above seem to look like a head of a frog or a snake or the front part of a boat. It depends on how you see it.

The image actually came from a simple photo of a prominent mall in Jakarta, Indonesia. Here is the photo:

The photo was symmetrically rotated and transformed into a new figure like the first image above. I have also added colors and some effects on the images. As you can see in the original picture, there is a street light post. In the image formed, it became a decoration on the upper part. The logo of the mall in the original picture became the eyes of the frog or snake in the image formed. The building on the left side of the mall became the platform in the lower part of the image. 

I have also created a variation of colors for the image. Here they are:

This is one of my work of art, if it is considered as one. I made this using an application in my mobile phone.

The image is being formed by using varying sizes and colors of circles. The figure formed resembles a pitcher plant or lilies. The white in the middle part represents the stigma of the flower. If you know a flower that looks like these, you may write it in the comment box below.

NUMBER PUZZLE

Here is a simple number puzzle. At first, it looks complicated but upon looking for patterns, the puzzle seem so easy. I'll teach you the first one, then answer the other one.

To solve this number puzzle, look for any relation of the numbers. Check if there is a possible relation of adjacent numbers, etc.

In this puzzle, the numbers in the first column are consecutive numbers. For the second column, notice that 3 is next to 1 and 2 in the first column. The number 3 is also the sum of 1 and 2. If you check the next number in the second column, 5 is the sum of 2 and 3 in the first column. You may continue checking for the pattern. Make sure that the pattern applies to all the numbers. Therefore the missing numbers in this puzzle are 7 and 20.

HOLY WEEK 2013


A simple mathematical statement but means a lot. May this statement remind us of the true meaning of the Holy Week - not just a vacation. We should realize the LIFE and LOVE that God has given us.

As the bible says "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).
We should repent and ask for forgiveness. "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord" (Acts 3:19) 


And with this we should pray. "This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,  your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread.  Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. '  For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins" (Matthew 6:9-15).Amen.
